Another day another dollar

Fri 12 February 2010

Never quite realised what a tiring day its been, work is one thing but if you don’t get rest when you come home it wears you out. Needing to relax for at least 2 to 3 hours is my minimum!!.. if I have had a really bad night of sleep the days before then its worse. Burning sensation on your eyes they feel heavy and you cant think straight everything swims around in your head really nasty stuff.. Anyhow tomorrow will be about the 5 to 6 weekend in a row chainsawing trees down in the forest. So getting quite used to it. Still trying to figure out how we are going to get the wood out of the forest!!. I have the chance of a tractor but there is a little bit involved and I don’t want to pay anything for it ;) defeats the object of cutting your own wood.. Anyhow ill figure away maybe an atc bike ;) Anyhow final entry for today going to chill drink a wee dram and see if I can get some sleep..

Interesting problem causing all the local machines syncing with ntp to fail. This was after an upgrade to wheezy but think it may have been there before.

I found a fair useful article on defragmenting big xfs filesystems.

Whats useful here is that xfs allows you to defrag whilst the machine is running !

Maintaining your XFS with XFS Filesystem Reorganiser xfs_fsr to defrag | Thushan Fernando Uncut.

Working in python

Using python and switching between versions is fairly easy here is how i did it

pip install virtualenv apt-get install python3 mkdir programming virtualenv -p /usr/bin/python3 programming/ cd programming/ . bin/activate

Now you can have a python 3 session without destroying your defualt version that most of the OS installation relies on!

A tabata work out

Having a look through my career and history today brought back lots of memories. I remember my Father bringing home a commodore pet of course it was a family computer much like the atari games console. But of course me being me tended to use it more that most I dont recall the date when it arrived but I remember that after many weeks programming this in fact it could have been many months we got introduced to a guy that designed and made computer games for arcades. He was a great guy and was also a radio amateur enthusiast but anyhow he wanted a commadore pet and he swapped it with me for a brand new commadore 64 think that was around 1982-83 not 100%. There was various computers broiught home after that but the one that remains in my mind was the amiga 500 that was around 1987. The love with the amiga was a life long thing and 3 years later I bought an amiga 1500 with my summer vacation work money!! It was a proud day my first personal computer bought with my hard earned cash.. From this date forth I was constenelty using the CLI of the workbench and tought myself 68000 assembler and C language. I tinktered alot with software and was interested in Unix (amiga being loosely based on it) I managed to minix running on the Amiga and it was until I studied for my qualifications that I understood the potential. We studined unix using old hpux main frame and terminal we also used PC’s with dos for learning pascal and C but I was always facinated with Unix. The in about 91-92 I down loaded some code from the internet that I happend to cath on a BBS system I struggle getting it to work as I only had an amiga and I was trying to get it to work with the PC emulater (hardware based). Needless to say I needed a PC.. so I built one.. By the time I had the bits and pieces to run this system properly Slackware was just available, I remember downloading this via ftpmail it took ages but compared with cassette tape ;) Anyhow..Slackware was installed Around 1991-1993 I passed my amateur radio examination fuelled by the need to use and abuse packet radio of which I did. I then became a TCP/IP over Ax25 BBS providing tcpip services including mail in and around Suffolk. 1994 I was basically forced to use DOS as most of the equipment I was using on a day to day basis was DOS I followed DOS the Dos to windows then windows 95. All of this time using unix as a personal platform. I was introuduced to many different types of unix platforms and have experimented with most.

I needed a fairly quick way in which to move from blogger to a simple blog as I am not in truth a real blogger! I hate the new privacy rules with google and Im trying to move away but I also need to have a platform mail to vent my frustrations and to note things down. Which up until this point was google blogger. So anyhow..I had a look around and found out that there was something called jekyll and markdown. I struggled for a long while playing with jekyll and github and getting frustrated that it wasn’t working as I had expected it to. I am not a programmer so for me programer things are not really my cup of tea. Any one problem I faced was that I have up until now been using macjournal to do all my blogging and I like it to be honest but there is not a way as far as I can tell to export to markdown other that sending to a blog site So my fix.. I have the jekyell install on my mac right click on the Blog in macjournal making sure that the Title is and filename is included in the exported files I select separate files for each entry and save these files in to the post/Blog directory once the files have been saved I run the below script I knocked up what this does is to rename all the files in folder to the format required for jeykll. #!/bin/bash for file in * do x=$(stat -f ‘%SB’ -t ‘%Y-%m-%d-%Y%m_%d.mmd’ “$file”) mv “$file” “$x” filename=echo $file | sed ‘s/.txt//g’ echo “—-” | cat - $x > /tmp/out && mv /tmp/out $x echo “title: $filename” | cat - $x > /tmp/out && mv /tmp/out $x echo “layout: default” | cat - $x > /tmp/out && mv /tmp/out $x echo “—-” | cat - $x > /tmp/out && mv /tmp/out $x done After I have the files created and changed to the correct format I then copy these back to the _post directory and run jekyll jekyll && rsync -avz —delete _site/ -e ssh root@78.129.180.204:/var/www/simon/ 0 drwxr-xr-x 12 quantrill 300 408 18 Apr 10:41 . 0 drwx———+ 41 quantrill 300 1394 11 Apr 16:44 .. 16 -rw-r—r—@ 1 quantrill 300 6148 18 Apr 10:42 .DS_Store 0 drwxr-xr-x 15 quantrill 300 510 13 Apr 15:46 .git 0 -rw-r—r— 1 quantrill 300 0 11 Apr 16:44 README 8 -rw-r—r— 1 quantrill 300 108 17 Apr 20:43 _config.yml 0 drwxr-xr-x 5 quantrill 300 170 17 Apr 23:17 _layouts 0 drwxr-xr-x 64 quantrill 300 2176 18 Apr 11:51 _posts 0 drwxr-xr-x 13 quantrill 300 442 18 Apr 11:48 _site 0 drwxr-xr-x 4 quantrill 300 136 17 Apr 19:54 css 0 drwxr-xr-x 5 quantrill 300 170 13 Apr 15:21 img 8 -rw-r—r— 1 quantrill 300 1137 17 Apr 23:16 index.html

Having a broken hand scuppers my archery antics, I have another 2 weeks to go, I managed to get a string made up this weekend for the wifes bow. This is mainly for a archery competition next weekend which I was looking forward to attending but I guess just walking around is better!

From Things that dont have a label!! I decided to to the ijsmeer in a kayak, only I forgot there were not that many trees this is a few years back but thought id post the image. My night was spent suspended between to fence posts there was barbed wire all the way a round the water making it more difficult to get off the water and last but not least early hours of the morning is when the big heaver tanker ships come down the river all in all a relaxing night out.. The night starts and sky were perfect !!

The hickory was scraped down on the sides o shape and the stave was sanded smooth. I made up a string and bent the limbs a little to flex them all felt good. until I was almost ready to danish oil the bow after a sanding I flexed the bow and it shattered. it looks to me like the hickory blew!! cracking the rest of the bow to fire wood the end ;)

Today went well I re sanded the belly to ake off all the markings and I drew some more tapers on I was happy with the shape I drew yesterday, I used another straight edge. The glue lines where rather nice .. After cutting the tapers on the bandsaw I started to shape the belly of the bow. After the shaping I tried it on the floor tiller looked good put it on the tiller stick looked good After I was happy that the tiller looked nice I put some set in to the bow bow bending it in the middle and slapping on some glue resentite this time as the cascamite was finished! I stuck on a piece of hickory and tied it up with tyre wrap to let the glue dry this will take another 6 hours to set

I tried to see how cheaply I could build a long bow so I popped down to the local builders merchants and bought two pieces of wood here in holland its called just hardhout (hardwood) and it never names anything, so not knowing anything about wood I looked for something light for the belly and with a nice gain hoping it was ipe ;) then a slightly darker wood for the core wood that was fairly thin but springy.. So my technical wood selection done I loaded it up in the care and brought it home. Once home I sanded both ides of the wood down to take of the layer of oil and then wiped it down with acatone (nail polish remover!!). Next I mixed up some cascamite and applied it to one side of the wood with a brush this was a bit messy and next time ill find up latex gloves!!. I used two old inner tubes to tightly wrap up the two pieces of wood After letting this all stand for 6 hours to set I unwrapped the inner tube leaving a messing stick with glue everywhere!! (mental note to self don’t use as much glue next time) After removing most of the rubber that stuck on the wood!! I marked the wood up I marked the centre of the bow with a pen mark I marked another 3inches above this line and another 1 inch below, this will become the handle area and also the marks where the taper will run to. Next I marked the tips in the centre and then marked 3/4 of an inch tip using the centre reference line. I then took a straight edge! and place it on the tip mark and the edge of the handle area mark And mark my taper lines now the basic shape is marked out and it now requires cutting out the blank..

First i carried my arrows in a plastic bag or by hand!, then I decided on my first field event i would buy a quiver I bought one but it was rather big to cart around in the woods It was leather tube with a strap to hold it around your waist. It works ok but like i said it gets in the way..I then saw hauke with a mary rose style back quiver and took a look on the net, at 43 quid!! for this I decided that I would not buy it. A very good friend of my Ian Blackwell had one that he wasn’t using so he lent me it. I copied it and made one myself. It turned out rather nice. I used it on the Terschelling shoot but found being on the back was awkward. The nice thing is that it is able to keep the arrows separate and if it starts to rain the cover can be used as a rain guard which is quite nice better than a bread bag methinks! So I took this design and came up with another solution for field archery.. Basically its a bag with waist or shoulder straps. To use the straps tie them around your waste or over shoulder for back use. You might notice that the strap nearer to the fletchings is sewed slightly higher up the bag this allows the fletchings to sit a bit higher, avoiding the arrow tipping on the floor scenario!! I think if I make another I will taper the bag slightly this will make a smaller bag and the straps will be correct without the need to reposition it. Arrows sit to the right just above your backside a very comfortable place to reach. I hope to try this out in the field soon. Looking at the left photo you can see that the straps can be wrapped around the arrows when transporting them nice to shove in your rucsack. There is also a rain cover but on this model I got it the wrong way around ;) the split should be opposite the straps. All in all its very easy to make it costs almost nothing to make and can be made in an hour or so.

The archers paradox best explained by this youtube video Picture speak a thousand words.. but anyhow the basic thing is this nock you arrow in your bow and depending how much of centre the bow is (how thick it is at the arrow rest) the more to the left or right your arrow is pointing. However the arrow if correctly spined for the bow will fly straight as if short form the centre, this is the paradox. When you draw the string of your bow and release it push’s from the back of the arrow causing it to bend inwards then it straightens out and bends the other way it continues vibrating until it stabilises. This effect causes the arrow to bend around the bow and shoots as though it comes from the centre line. If the spine of your arrow doest match your bow then some interesting effects can happen a stiff arrow could fly to one side instead of straightening up. I to low spine can shatter as it is being push beyond its bend radius. The standard way of measuring the deflection of arrows comes form the USA and is specifically designed for american flatbows. It uses a 2lb weight a scale and an arrow suspended 26” from each other. I built my own here very roughly The arrow is suspended between the 26inch gap and the arm is placed on to the arrow making sure you get the orientation correct you should nock across the grain so the strain from the string goes across the grain make sure the grain runs horizontal when you do this test ;) I created a very crude scale notice the use of duct tape my trade mark. the scale here is measured from the centre point using the piece of wood marked with .25” spaces between 0 and 1inch from the resting centre point of the pointer arm The centre point here being the x on the rawlplug. The scales used are the american standards for a 2lb weight between 26” and are used for american flat bows it is recommended that you spin arrows roughly the poundage of your bow at 28 inch draw. But for a longbow it is recorded that this be 2/3 of the total weight of your bow. I think the best way is to make up a few shafts of differing spine weights around the poundage of your bow and shot them with piles but no feathers. Check which ones shoot well and choose that as your spine rating for that particular bow..

Yesterday decided to pop down and take a look in quicks archery, as I was about 25 mins down the road I thought it might be worth a look as I have had lots of long evenings looking through there catalogues.. Anyhow I popped over the quicks in waterlooville I arrived around 1:30 and found they were shut apparently there lunch time is 12’ish to 2’ish what a job ;) But that’s probably due to the bad parking around the area.. Anyhow I went in and there was a shop full of people asking questions, I took a look around and found it to be not much more than a market trader.. The catalogue is much better representation of the company.. I asked if they had a feather cutter as I really was interested but didn’t want to pay the postage and of course they didn’t have one in stock. There was no mention of ordering it or checking to look in one of the other stores.. Sorry quicks a little disappointing..

Worlingham field archers seem to be having a rough time with the land they use for the field archery club a really nice wooded area located in worlingham. The day started at 10am I arrived around 9am to meet up with my uncle. We started off with a cup of tea and a chat about the best equipment to use I borrowed a longbow from him and a few arrows and of course the quiver used on robin hood the movie!!. I felt the part ;) I tried the quiver over the shoulder on my back and went for a practice shoot but managed to almost stab my eye out with an arrow whilst trying to get it out of the quiver decided to tie it off round the waist this felt much better and I will be making one when I get home as I found this to work really good. Especially for field archery. I started shooting the arrows from my uncle they all shot to the left I decided these where obviously to stiff and switched for lighter set. These shot much straighter however didn’t improve my score much!.. I heard 500’s and 400’s … I managed a good 53 ;) but the day was a real treat it rained hard once and lucky I listened to my dad and took his ‘pak a mak’ it saved the day. Fletchings got little bit wet but the oiled canvas quiver was able to roll over the fletchings need to make one did I mention that !!.. We had a course of 14 targets I believe it was and we went around twice, as always it was a fun walk and nice people there were three ladies and an other gent who I paired up with to shoot. I found out later that all of them were very good ;) and learned a number of tips. Now I need to get practice in for the shoot in balk….

Had an invite to go shooting with my uncle at the local shooting ground here are a few photos with the action the weather was nice the mozzies were about tomorrow is the field archers at Worlingham so i,m preparing with lots of tea and a few crates of cider bought in for later ;) sweet….

I don’t think i’ll get away with shooting in the garden although i think it is safe i think the neighbor thinks not anyhow I did some searching and it dawned on me that re-enactors use rubber blunts to shoot at each other ;) So i found on Richard Head’s website’ redheads’ I like ordering form Richard but it always costs me a fortune for the postage as im in the Netherlands I did a little more research and I found another company here in the netherlands ordered and waiting Get a redhead! I think I will be able to shoot at a can or two its not quite the same as shooting at my target but we will give it a try. I got help from Ian to stick on my new hickory backing on my bow to repair it and I got the band saw out and trimmed it down, the glue lines are a little thick but its looking nice. The nocks are glued on just need to sand it and oil it down now the glue lines will clean up so its looking prity good so far ;) Just thought i’d also post my sons bow, it’s hard maple american flat bow it pulls about 16 lbs at 17 inches and it can pump an arrow down the back garden as quick as my wife’s 38 pounder ;) ‘Oma’ said it’s not a toy and he can not use it unless we are there hehehehe oops ;) And of course these are my next arrow tests, i’m inserting hard wood here originally the hardwood was to make footed arrows but i cut the kerf in the wrong place and the wood splits bit annoying I made 15 but its good to put the wood to work. These three arrow shafts are 3/8” made with a dowel cutter and hand sanded here ill put the self nocks and then ill get around to feathers and points.. here they are waiting for the glue to dry out..

One of the main issues with 3d archery as I have found is that most people lose them.. Allow I have done pretty well I don’t think I have actually ever lost an arrow!! although I have broken a few. Anyhow my point is it can get expensive to buy arrows. So the obvious way to keep up the hobby is to start making your own. When i first started I hadn’t got a clue what to get or what to do so I hope to put down some notes here to make it a little easier. There are a number of parts to an arrow. The shaft the point the nock and the feathers. All of this can be bought quite easily from the suppliers of arrows and archery equipment. I have done this up till now and the results have been fairly good. The first set of arrows I bought ready made for the bow I had at the time and they have lasted quite well. However shortly after this I wanted to make my own; so the next step was to buy the bits and stick them together. To be honest I thought a arrow was just an arrow ;) but this is not the case there are many things to take into consideration when you have arrows. Type of wood is the first choice, I was lead to believe very early on that port Orford cedar was by far the best arrow making material so I bought 12. The shafts were weighted 20-35 40-50 and so on I had a 50 pound bow so 40-50 was good (I thought) I was’t to sure about the feathers and the points so I got full size feathers a tube of glue and some 3d points. I stuck all the feathers and points on and shot them. First thing I noticed was that the arrows shot of at an angle maybe my bad archery technique, then every other arrow the points came away from the shaft I used hot melt glue.. I also noticed a cut forming on my hand and then I got a feather lodged rather deep in my finger.. Mmm I thought this arrow making business must have more to it than this!!!.. There is a saying that you can shoot well with good arrows and a bad bow but you always shoot bad with a fantastic bow and bad arrows….. So this is my research so far in to the construction of wooden arrows.. Wood: Many believe that port Orford cedar is the best for arrow shafts, probably because of this and the fact that the trees have to lye until the bark rots before the shaft produces make any there is a world shortage. Ash and birch were used during medieval periods to get a heavier arrow and now a days the most common is pine. Basically all shorts of wood can be used to create your shaft and it will depend a lot on what weight you want to end up with.. I have used myself port Orford cedar and pine and find the only difference is the really nice smell of cedar when you work the wood, cedar is a little lighter so if you were making arrows for distance then I guess cedar would be a better choice. Incidentally shafts can be pre bought from the supplies with no further work required. However.. i like to do things different I have bought shafts pre made there are standard thicknesses they generally come in 1/4 5/16 11/32 …………more

Archery to me was always people with lots of expensive bows with expensive equipment shooting at a target at the end of a long field. Not once as a kid can I ever remember making a bow. I never tried it at all. I think mainly because of no interest in the sport. However as sports and hobbies go I tend to see or read something that takes my fancy and I go at it 100% of my energy.. Anyhow, I got interested in making your own bows and arrows I read quite a bit and also found links to traditional archery, I happened to mention this to my farther Terry Quantrill, and he told me that my uncle made his own bows and arrows and next time I visit the UK I should make an appointment. Anyhow cut a long story short the next family visit back to the UK I arranged to meet up. We met up at the club Keith goes to and I got an introduction to shooting a stick!! First thing i realised was that its quite hard to draw a traditional bow not as easy as i thought it was going to be, but I carried on and keith showed me the basics of holding the bow and pointing your arm at the target and shooting the session lasted about 1.5 hours and we finished off walking around as Keith shot a few arrows at the targets on the course of the club. Had a long chat after then we arranged a visit to Keiths workshop. Keith showed me the basics of building a bow and arrow making and a quick intro to string making. After a few cups of tea chocolate biscuits and a few book recommendations we left and returned to the Netherlands. I did a lot of searching for information on the internet regarding building and reading lots of books and I happened to catch an advertisement for a dutch book on bow building which I bought and found out that the guy selling the book houdtkorts Jan Van de Veen, the website at the time was advertising bowbuilding weekend. After reading through I wasn’t to sure if it was beginners as it was quite expensive and planned at the same time as my farther in laws birthday party it was a hard choice to make. However I went and watched. I had a go myself and building a flat bow. I cut this out of a green tree that me and my next door neighbour cleaved with wooden pegs and axe the night before. The bow was built in half a day and then I Anyhow I met there two guys Hauke Gipp from asgaard archery and Ian Blackwell a welsh boywer, both were busy with building but we shared a few whiskies and both me and the next door neighbor decided to buy a longbow each. The bows were made by Ian Blackwell and we were given the chance to try them out so this was the second time I had ever shot a bow. Well the bow needed ‘bits and pieces’, so purchases were made at asgaard archery and I was invited to take part in a 3d Archery competition here in the polder in Kuinre Bos. Unfortunately on the day the family was sick so I had to cancel at the last minute but I got asked to the lierop 3d shoot. In between the competitions I managed to contact the club that organised the kuinre forest shoot So I went a few times to the indoor course at the lemersterland club where I met up with a number of competition shooters, of course I go to the club now to practise as much as possible.. Beides the other members find it funny me turning up every week with a different bow ;) Anyhow long story short I met up again with Hauke and Ian in lierop and spent the weekend drinking shooting and talking about archery and bow building. here is me at lierop missing the target yet again!! the weekend was a scream from start to finish I learned a lot about the sport I had a good time with the people that went and I got invited to the Den Helder shoot.. Had a great laugh and met up with hauke and Ian again.. Then I found out there was another bowbuilding weekend on so I signed up for it it was beng held at the same place and was being done by ian. Unfortunalty it got cancelled at the last minute. I happend to cal lIan up to ask why and he told me that he knew nothing about the cancellation and that he still had wood and tools bought for the weekend. My wife suggested I ask the father in law to use his farm, he agreed it was arranged and agreed and the bowbuilding went ahead almost as planed. A good group of people turned up and I built and finished off a laminated longbow with the help of Ian. We practiced a little bit of long distance shooting on a field as the bow I built was 75lb @28 and a bit more at 32” I ended up straining my shoulder a little bit, Ian gave me lots of advice on how to pull hevier bows this helped alot but of course if you dont hink and do you end up forgetting the right way anyhow the weekend gave me a sore shoulder but a fantastic bow. The weekend got a number of family members interested my father in law built his own bow my collegue built his own I bought heleen a bow for a present and an aunt of heleen also bought a bow. So the family is now all kitted out. I also found out that my uncle helped with archery in the robin hood movie starring russell crow here far right.. After this weekend it was discussed that it would be good to go to Kent to the fraternity of St George shoot I mean I had the bow for it now and the teqnique so the ferry was booked. I travelled with Ian and met Hauke and his wife there. http://www.longbow-archers.com I met a number of good people and had a really good time i’ll be going next year to.. After returning I managed to break my bow it started off one sunday on the field out side the father in laws I shot a few arrows over a tree at short range for practice then we went to the long distance field!! I shot 2 arrows then the third the bow shattered in my hand at full draw ;) ouch!! So back to the workshop I built myself another 2 bows a self bow from hickory and a laminated bow from hickory hardhout!.. The hiclory bow turned out rather well only i ended up with a fairly stiff bottom the top nice and bendy.. The bows a little sluggish but shoots ok. the laminated bow cracked on the glue line after final tillering and wasted three days work ;) In between all of this I have been learning and making, and I continue to do so into the future. I hope that i will note here stuff i learn and put to practice mainly for me to review but also a personal resource available to others that want to learn by doing……. Next shoot is terschelling ……

Just spent a week in zeeland cadzand to be precise, nice place very flat very rural there is a fantastic beach all the way from breskens down to Knokke which is in belgium. The beaches are a bit odd if your not used to them They are very sandy but the very industrial ;). With a car and two children camping 1 week for us was more than enough we drove around the area going to breskens and taking the beach road stopping at various places as we went. Sluis was interesting very nice village not to far away from the camping One this that we noticed straight away with sluis was the parking and how busy it was it turns out that during the session sluis is open 7 days a week!!. The second things we noticed was although this place looks quite pretty walk just in to the centre and you are confronted with a sex shop on almost every part of the high street!!. Which I found was a little bit out of order. But I guess the locals are used to it!. Sluis has a large amount of tourists mostly belgium people, this was where we started to notice the bad driving and high tempered local people!. A walk through the high street gives you window upon window of shops ideal for that nice shopping trip, and some really nice old buildings and the end of the street is a windmill which we headed to but is now turned into a restaurant and the access to the top of the mill was closed. Incidentally most campsites have showers that take 50cents, trying to get change in the centre of sluis and cadzand is very very difficult so if you want showers and hot water then take a bag of 50cents with you. We also stopped at ‘de Afslag’ http://www.deafslag.nl/ this was ideal it is basically a small restaurant or ‘eetcafe’ that you pay a few euros for each child then you can eat and drink coffee etc and there is a huge play area for the kids to run around on. We had a dinner here which I had fish very nice although it was a little to herby for me I like fish natural tasting. But the service was a little slow but the food and the kids enjoyment made up for it. We stopped off for an ice cream in cadzand bad and found this really od ice cream parlor called new ice age or something similar, it had uv lights in and out and a hardly anybody there so we had an ice cream mmmmmm very much recommended the ice cream was superb. We had a day trip to Brugge We passed through Knokke which was really nice except the mad driving lanes that are quite a lot in belgium side of the border. We stopped at a place to eat just off the centre and this took absolutely ages we wasted almost 2.5 hours here waiting for food we thought it was because of the business inside the place as we sat outside but… when I went to the wc there was nobody else in the place so what happened there I really don’t know. But the rest of the day consisted of walking around and looking at the art and wonderful buildings. Interesting art

Here is me last boxing day waiting for that big ride!!! (notice big swell!!)

So whats the best way to spend sunday.. First spent the morning water proofing the tent for the holidays then I thought it would be a good idea to shoot some arrows.. So I selected the new arrows I just built, shot a few over the tree short range to warm up the bow.. Then we went over to the main field for a distance shoot 1st arrow 180 or so yards nice… 2nd arrow 195 or so yards better 3rd arrow kaaaaaarck not so good Bugger I thought best I start building another bow ;( On a positive note nobody got hurt just a bit of pride and a bruised bow hand I was lucky there was nobody standing close by!!

Well the weekend was getting closer to go to the weekend again this year in warns unfortunately there was not enough people so it got cancelled. I heard this from the the guy organising it I was a little bit annoyed as I was really looking forward to it. Anyhow got on the telephone and talking with one of the guys doing the bowbuilding and told him a suggestion from my wife, that we carried the workshops to my father inlaws farm.. Cool me thinks so it was suggested agreed and organised. The weekend got off to a good start myself Ian and Alan turned up friday evening setup tents and had a beer or two.. whilst cleaning done and setting up the workshop area. Saturday final preparations and no cooked breakfast!! Saturday was basically bow building all day with the expert eye of Ian Blackwell everybody managed to build a bow and really just needed to finish off on sunday morning. We also had a chance to shoot the bows saturday on a field opposite the farm. Saturday was a bbq and a demo for my farther inlaws birthday guests, followed by reminiscing over a few ciders around the fire and boring the hell out of hauke with 1970’s children’s theme tunes Sunday got off to another early morning I managed to get a cooked breakfast going and Ian and hauke enjoyed theirs whilst watching the workers finishing off their bows.. Followed by more shooting and tidying up.. All in all a fantastic weekend thanks to all that made it possible waiting for next time.. The End…..

3d Animal round, first time I have ever done competition archery.. What a weekend really enjoyed it I joined up with Hauke from Asgaard Archery and Ian Blackwell and a few others from the den helder The group made it around the course and it was a really new and interesting learning curve for me, weather on saturday was overcast and a little bit wet sunday the clouds disappeared and the sun came out but the nights were cold. Mental note to self give the polish tarp tent to the kids to play in its to small and its very cold!!

Great Macjournal just removed all my pictures from my diary notes and blog !! bugger

Friday was a day of joy, I got the phone call that my new bike was ready, I have an old bike now for about 15 years and this is my new piece of kit Its blooming brilliant! first day to work on it tomorrow cant wait ;)

Ok the whisky last night was probably not a good idea, the kids where basically awake all night with coughs and sneezes and although Heleen got out to see them it still wakes you up. And I don’t work well with broken sleep!. But nobodies fault really something you get used to just glad my wife managed to look after the kids!. Anyhow.. Up early rolled out of bed banged my head on the roof over hang near to my side of the bed, I often do this when i’m tired!. So, then it’s a case of getting washed dressed and downstairs no easy task when your still sleeping but I managed to get it sorted.. I arrived downstairs and the two dogs were still asleep! grrrr.. Kicked them outside made me feel better.. Got together the chainsaw the tools and petrol for the days cutting, then I had to make a few sandwiches spelt bread as I cant have normal bread! I through in a chunk of chicken grillworst, and a half eaten packet of crisps. Two Flasks of hot water and a box of tea bags.. Set Set off to the forest, its still snowing here and there is no salt on the roads and I still of course only have summer tyres on the car must be my english upbringing hehehe.. Arrived at the forest to find other people there already cutting which was a bit annoying as I needed to park the car and there was already a car in the way!!.So started cutting down trees, stopped for some lunch around 12 then continued this went on till about 3:30 then we packed up and came home. I was last out and on the way home almost got taken out by a roe deer running across the road!. Got home safe fell asleep on the sofa while the wife popped out for chinese food Help put the kids to bed then took a shower feeling much better decided to pour a malt and start getting my dvd collection on the PC. Nicely stacked wood.

Interesting day, the day started quite ordinary with coffee and a chat over the computer screen to my college. The the calls started coming in, first was a colleague in the UK office requiring me to set up there printers and internet connection. This was a breeze, I just purchased and installed Teamviewer, it is a breeze to install and it is also great for support. You can use it free but as a business I feel it only right to pay for it if it is helpful, it costs about 400 to 500 for the basic software and its worth it. Second can the esxi server install, never have I install this software or used it for that matter, as most of you know I use Linux or Mac, Windows is just something I put up with in my day job… anyhow first off I downloaded and installed the latest version of esxi, everything looked good until it hung!! I tried this a few times and then finally decided to install a lower version it worked it installed. It appears as though version 4 of esx needs 64 bit machines to work and the one I had available wasnt up for it.. Next came the problem when I rebooted the machine it kept booting up in the old OS, this was down to esxi not recognising the disks that had the old os on I fixed this by snatching the two disks, the one disk had enough for what I needed to do anyhow.. Next came the import from the old server my colleague uploaded the software from uk to here took all night. Then I tried to import this didn’t work as apparently you need to convert ova files!! with another tool from vmware. So I down loaded and installed this and tried it about for to five times each time it failed, it appears as though there is a bug in vmware esxi with files over 8G!! Next step was to link the two servers together and copy direct this is currently going strong and will take another 11 hours to complete all in all 2 days wasted ;) but a lot learned about a system I will never probably use again!

It’s now 2010 and what have I done in blog world.. Nothing.. I should get this thing updated I have just installed office 2010 as a beta test and hope that this will enable me to update more regular but now have to go the wife is picking me up and I need to get ready to go out this evening to see my stage student give his final presentation should be nice.. He has deserved it..

Well not to much written in the last few days as I have been busy with the christmas festivities, its funny I have never been one for writing stuff done and I forget stuff really easy.. Anyhow the holidays went well it was good to be back home in England, with my family over the festive season. I think John Garret probably enjoyed it the most he was really within his element chasing around the sofa most og the time with my sisters kids.. The weather was prity good as was the food and drink I now have to seriously go on a diet.. I put on 1kg! well should be able to shift that if I work hard at it. I have the attic to clear up and shift up all my weightlifting gear then I have the back bedroom free for Heleen to do the wallpapering.. it gives me a room specific for my weights and I am pushing forward with cycling to work as well its nice to get ou in the fresh air. Its a bit smelly at the moment as the farmers are digging out the ditches I guess in prep for the winter but boy does it stink! Got myself all reflective gear for on the bike its really dangerous on the way to and from work with all the tractors and the lorries roaring up and down this country lane! and they say that cycling improves your health ;) Reminds me must look for my mobile phone cant seem to find it ok more later work to do ,..

Try sudo modprobe snd_sun_cs4231 to load the module. When I did this in a GNOME Terminal window, I instantly got a message on screen that new sound hardware had been detected and that it was now ready to be configured. To have the module loaded during startup, you have to manually append a line with snd_sun_cs4231 to /etc/modules: Code: # /etc/modules: kernel modules to load at boot time. # # This file contains the names of kernel modules that should be loaded # at boot time, one per line. Lines beginning with “#” are ignored. snd-sun-cs4231

Tips for managing dual-control nodes If you find yourself in the situation where you need to do hands-on management of the control nodes, here are a few random bits of advice. * This may sound a bit obvious, but the clumanager software depends on Collage’s ability to start itself, as defined in /etc/init.d/collage-core. In the unlikely event that Collage does not start up, look at /var/log/messages and /var/log/cluster to determine what’s causing the start-up problem and fix any issues. * To the extent you need to manage the dual-control nodes, you should be familiar with a few clumanager commands: o clustat - this command shows the status of the failover cluster, the configured services, and the IP address of the active control node. Output from clustat looks like this: sample clustat output o clusvcadm - this command allows you to enable, disable, relocate, and restart services in the failover cluster. Using clusvcadm requires that the failover cluster is operational (that is, the daemons are running and able to access the shared disk) from the node on which the command is invoked. A service can have one of the following states: - Pending – the service is transitioning to running or disabled state. - Running – the service is online and being actively monitored. - Disabled – the service is not online and has been stopped. This state warrants your attention. - Stopped – the service is disabled, but will start when the failover cluster processes are started up. - Failed – the service is not online. Again, look into this one. * If clumanager fails over too many times in succession (failing back-and-forth between the two control nodes), it automatically stops the collage-core service and puts it in a disabled state. The clumanager software then uses chckconfig, setting clumanager to off. After you debug and correct any problems with collage-core, you have to manually restart clumanager. To do so on a dual-control node system, use the following commands on both control nodes: rm/opt/cassatt/etc/pingpong.txt chkconfig clumanager on service clumanager start * You can use the following command to verify that clumanager services are running properly: service clumanager status If the output is similar to the following (PIDs will vary), the clumanager service is running properly: clumembd (pid 5144) is running… cluquorumd (pid 5138) is running… clulockd (pid 5155) is running… clusvcmgrd (pid 5209) is running… * If for some reason you are in a shell and doing something on /cassatt (the mounted file system that houses all of the Collage-specific files, system database, et al.), a failover will pull the rug out from under you. So, if your shell session just disappears, a failover might have occurred. This could leave your editing session or whatever you were doing on /cassatt in an indeterminate state.

So another weekend over, it was a bit weird this weekend laid in bed most of the morning on saturday and in a feeble attempt to get up early on sunday it was worse got up at lunch time. Mind you spent the time with my wife and child that was nice family time!. I did some Linux study that was also good, had a severe headache on sunday evening and it woke me up this morning in fact I got up before the alarm went!. Still in pain now but have taken pain killers that seems to have helped. Now sitting down for a nice coffee and catching up on some emails. Office is empty again must be getting closer to getting rid of everybody.. note to self must figure out how to put pictures on the blog!!

First make sure you a route set to bambam from the machine you wish to access usually something like Route add bambam rt1 The set up a putty ssh connection to Bambam (use different remote port. Port 9876 is only an example and can used by only 1 person on Bambam!) See below…. While logged into BAMBAM in the ssh session connect to the remote system using the command below: Ssh –C –L :: -l ssh -C -L 55643:10.157.144.183:70 -l root 172.20.161.114 From your laptop you can now connect to the service using the localhost address connect web browser to http://127.0.0.1:70. login as: squantri squantri@10.224.177.36’s password: Last login: Mon Oct 25 14:37:47 2004 from nlattp1ws135-10.att.cmg.nl **** BAMBAM **** Home directories

There are logfiles that contain a record of your installation. These are: /var/adm/smlogs/install.cdf - configuration description file /var/adm/smlogs/install.log - general log file /var/adm/smlogs/install.FS.log - file system creation logs /var/adm/smlogs/setld.log - log for the setld(8) utility /var/adm/smlogs/fverify.log - verification log file # This can also be used to access a service running on a different port for example, say you have connected to a system on 81.52.180.2 and the service is running on 10.157.144.183 then you need to use the same technique with putty connect using tunnels as before only instead of to bambam you goto the 81.52.180.2 address once there issue the ssh command ssh -C -L 55643:10.157.144.183:70 -l root 81.52.180.2 this will allow you to use you local laptop to view upower and any other service running on the other port once the ports are set up.. setting up to port 20550 you can browse the mmh ssh -C -L 55643:10.157.144.183: 20550 -l root 81.52.180.2 127.0.0.1:70/mmh/info 127.0.0.1:70/mmh/messagebrowser

Ok so yesterday I figured out how to convert and burn movies from divx!! using ubuntu. ffmpeg -i movie.avi -target pal-vcd movie.mpg mpgtx -4 movie.mpg -n m This will convert the movie from most supported formats to pal vcd then split the file up to fit on cdrom’s

Ok so I struggled to get Minix3 installed on ubuntu this is how I did it $sudo modprobe tun $sudo modprobe kqemu $sudo tunctl ##Create a Disk Image $qemu-img create -f qcow minux.img 2G ##Install the minix distribution $qemu -localtime -net user -net nic -m 128 -cdrom IDE-3.1.2a.iso -hda minux.img -boot d ##Shutdown ##boot the new image $qemu -localtime -net user -net nic -m 128 -cdrom IDE-3.1.2a.iso -hda minux.img -boot c shutdown and sqemu -localtime -net user -net nic -m 128 -cdrom IDE-3.1.2a.iso -hda minux.img -boot det the network card in the minix enviroment qemu_pci=1 save boot Then install the packages by $qemu -localtime -net user -net nic -m 128 -cdrom /dev/cdrom -hda minux.img -boot c #packman option 1

Wierd, every Monday there is usually a big jam and it takes me forever getting in to world this morning it was not the same. I got here nice on time, mind you still dark! Weeknd was nice had a day of shopping and cooking on saturday to get the indian food ready for the meal we had with the inlaws. That was nice, the fodd was not to spicy and it was liked by all which was surprising as mum in law doesn’t usually like spicy stuff but this went really well.

Why is it when ever you set your alarm clock on to get up early that it never works! Well the Alarm clock works only you don’t. And not only that but when you turn over to go back to sleep again you continue usually for 2 hours and then you wake up feeling crap. Mentally because you oversleep physically, because in effect you have had broken sleep.
