PC Support scams
You receive a telephone call from a technical support person from Microsoft, Google or Facebook they tell you that your PC is full of virus, and that they can fix it for you all you need to to is to load up some remote access software and they will solve all your problems for you. You would probably be given a price for them to solve your problem.
Believe it or not gangs have reportedly gotten away with 1.5bn USD in 2015 alone, its not only financial problems you get stuck with either. Once you have given these gangs access to your PC remotely to fix the problems they have the ability to steal any private data on your desktop or install a backdoor program to allow them full access at any time without having to call you up before hand.
Generally and good tech company will never cold call you, as a general rule they also do not know that you have issues on your PC unless you call them or send crash reports your self.
This is not a new issue and has been ongoing for many years but in 2015 it has spiked.
In 2014 Microsoft gave out advice:
Ask if there is a fee if there is hang up
Do not give remote access to your machine unless its a legitimate business
Take callers information down and report to local authorities
Never give out credit card details or financial details to anybody from tech support!
The other option is to get a reliable managed services provider to provide your tech support, they will be able to advise on the best protection for you your family and your business.
